Paint mist extraction system

HWK Heilbronn
The Heilbronn-Franken Chamber of Crafts is a modern service provider both in terms of public law and through the valuable educational, advisory and promotional services it offers to the approximately 12,600 craft enterprises in the Heilbronn-Franken region with five urban and rural districts.

One focus of the many tasks is the continued education of craftsmen and the training of young people. For this purpose, the Training and Technology Centre (BTZ) has 13 workshops, 8 theory rooms and 2 computer rooms. Trainees complete their inter-company training at the BTZ, craftsmen use this opportunity for further training and master craftsmen attend courses to prepare for their examinations.

The BTZ is also used by schools of general education so that pupils can learn about different trades in the workshops.

One of the thirteen workshops is a carpentry workshop with the workshop areas woodworking and wood surface, which is equipped with all common machines for working and processing wood and wood materials, so that the inter-company training can be organised in a practical way. In line with this claim to be the "extended workbench of a company", the workshop also includes a paint shop consisting of a paint room and a drying room.

The modernisation of the previously used paint mist extraction system and the associated experience in regular training applications were linked to requirements, also with regard to energy consumption and other specifications, e.g. the sound level of the system.

In the course of the tendering procedure, the company Maschinen-Grupp GmbH, Bad Wimpfen, was then contacted, which had the contact to the Southwest branch, of the company SPÄNEX.

After an intensive planning and project phase, the new system concept was convincingly presented to those responsible in the workshop, so that the company Grupp, together with the company SPÄNEX, implemented the order for the realisation of the new paint mist extraction system.

In contrast to the old system, the painting room and the drying room were equipped with two separate systems so that painting and drying can take place independently of each other, thus providing the greatest possible flexibility with regard to use and processes. Furthermore, different conditions are possible for painting and drying in terms of air volume flows and air temperatures, depending on the range of parts and the paints used.

The disadvantage of the high energy consumption and the operating restrictions at lower outdoor temperatures was due to the fact that the exhaust air was blown directly into the open air and the thermal energy contained in it was not used to heat the fresh air. In addition, the supply and exhaust air units were installed outside, which meant additional heat losses.

These conceptual disadvantages of the old system have also had a major impact in terms of costs, as the thermal energy for heating the supply air is generated in a gas-fired boiler system.

The two new supply air units were arranged indoors on a sectional steel frame and the supply air unit for the painting room was equipped with a heat exchanger, which is used to preheat the cold outside air drawn in during the heating period.

This heat recovery recovers approx. 60 % of the heat energy contained in the exhaust air, so that the reheater in the supply air unit only has to provide the remaining temperature difference to the desired blow-in temperature. At higher outside temperatures in summer, the heat recovery achieves a cooling effect, so that more pleasant working conditions also exist for the painter in summer.

Another important contribution to improving efficiency and user-friendly operation is made by the PLC-based control system with touch panel. It keeps the injection temperatures in the painting and drying rooms constant during the cold season, regardless of the outside temperatures, whereby different blow-in temperatures can be selected for the two rooms. For example, the air temperature in the drying room can be set higher depending on the type of paint in order to shorten the drying times.

Another aspect with regard to energy efficiency are the motors of the supply and exhaust fans, which are operated via frequency converters. The operator of the system can use the parameterisation to preselect the speed and thus the air quantities that are automatically started up when painting or drying is started. Other important functions to ensure operation are the freeze protection of the heat exchangers and the pressure monitoring of the filter elements, which inform the operator when the filter elements are saturated and need to be replaced.

Another issue in need of improvement was the excessively high noise level of the old units. The new systems score in this respect with a significantly lower noise level.

After almost one and a half years of operation, those responsible for the joinery summarise their experience with the new equipment for the paint shop as follows:

„With the new system, the energy consumption could be significantly reduced, which also means a corresponding cost saving. Furthermore, the operating restrictions in the cold season have been eliminated and the plant operates much more quietly. Another important advantage for us is the flexibility achieved in the use of the system and the possibility of being able to variably adjust the relevant variables that have an influence on the surface quality, such as the air temperatures, the supply air and exhaust air volume flows, etc., depending on the type of paint. The entire handling of the project also contributed to our satisfaction, so that we are convinced that we have found the right partners for this subject area in the companies Maschinen-Grupp and SPÄNEX“.
