Extraction &
Briquetting

Plastics
The machining of plastic parts (sawing, milling, drilling, etc.) produces chips and dusts that have to be extracted and briquetted due to their voluminosity respectively their potential hazard.

As a manufacturer of extraction systems and briquetting presses, SPÄNEX is in a position to supply and install closed system solutions from material collection at the processing machines to conveying, filtering and briquetting, whereby the extensive product portfolio of SPÄNEX covers both, craft and industrial sectors.

Modern extraction systems can continuously adapt to the varying demand for extraction power by regulating the speed of the extraction fans via frequency converters. Depending on the operating conditions the achievable savings potential with this technology can be up to 50 % compared to conventionally designed, uncontrolled systems. To achieve such efficiency values, the entire plant system must be optimally adjusted to the conditions of the individual case.

In the performance range with extraction volume flows of up to 10,000 m³/h, the product series of compact dust extractors (Fig. 1) with the possibility of installation in the production rooms offers ideal conditions for energy-saving and cost-effective solutions.

The range of compact dust extractors comprises 11 types, starting with the SMU 12 with a suction nozzle diameter of 125 mm and a suction volume flow of 1,200 m³/h up to the SMU 100 with a suction nozzle diameter of 355 mm and a suction volume flow of 10,000 m³/h. The larger dust extractors (SMU 32 to SMU 100) can alternatively be equipped with a briquetting press (Fig. 2). The following advantages distinguish the entire series:

  • Compactness (small footprint, low overall height)

  • High suction power

  • Quiet, energy-saving operation

  • Complete control system

  • User-friendliness

  • Tested by the BGHM trade association (DGUV test certificate, GS mark)

The compact dust extractors are complete separation stations with an exhaust fan on the clean air side, which is equipped with a high-performance impeller so that high efficiencies are achieved..

The performance data in combination with the compactness of the units are achieved by specially developed filter elements which are characterised by an extremely high separation efficiency, excellent cleanability and long service lives. The filter materials are adapted to the operating conditions. Due to the high separation efficiency, the air can be returned to the working area in many applications, taking into account the technical regulations for hazardous substances, so that no heating energy is lost and no additional supply air system has to be installed to compensate the air balance.

The extractor housings are designed pressure shock resistant (200 mbar), so that indoor installation is possible when extracting dusts of dust explosion class St1. Depending on the amount and structure of the material to be extracted, various containers are available:

  • Filling bins with inserted filling bags with a capacity of 165 l (1 - 3 tonnes depending on extractor´s size).

  • Buffer containers with a capacity of 500 l with discharging unit and rotary valve for transfer of dust to a container or a pneumatic conveying system.

  • Buffer container with a capacity of 500 l with discharging unit and briquetting press arranged underneath (Fig. 2).

Dust extractors with higher air performance are usually equipped with frequency converters, as already explained at the beginning. With several extraction points with different switch-on times of the processing machines, there is a time-dependent varying demand for extraction power. The speed control of the extraction fan automatically adjusts the extraction power of the dust extractor to the respective demand. In addition to the effect of saving electricity, there are further advantages:

  • Low-noise operation due to lower fan speed

  • Soft start without current peaks

  • Constant extraction performance independent of the degree of contamination of the filter elements.

Of course, SPÄNEX supplies the complete accessories (extraction hoods, pipe system with fittings, automatic lock slides, return air duct system - if required) and the complete control system.

In a specific application, a specialist in the plastics industry had  to be supplied with a system for the extraction of two plastics machines. The chips and dusts produced during processing had to be returned to the production process, as they were raw material with a high material value. However, as the production residues in the form of chips and dust were not recyclable, briquetting was proposed as a solution. The briquetting trial carried out at SPÄNEX showed the following results:

  • excellent briquette quality

  • volume reduction approx. 8:1

After some detailed questions regarding the installation and operation of the extraction and briquetting plant had been clarified with the customer, the order was placed with SPÄNEX. .

Two compact dust extractors with buffer container, discharging unit and rotary valve (decoupling element) were used for transfer to a pneumatic transport system.

The plastic chips and dusts taken over from the transport system are conveyed into a feeding container. A briquetting press (Fig. 3) is arranged below this container, which achieves the following performance data:

  • Hourly processed chip volume: 0.75 m³/h

  • Bulk density of plastic particles: approx. 120 - 180 kg/m³

  • Minimum compacted material quantity: approx. 90 kg/h

  • Briquette dimensions: 125 x 70 x 56 mm

  • Weight of single briquette: approx. 0.4 kg

It was not only the technical advantages of this solution that convinced the customer to purchase the system. Another important aspect was the amortisation time of the system. Due to the recyclability of the extracted plastic chips and dusts by briquetting, the period for return of invest was less than 2 years.

Advantages at a glance

  • Demand-adapted extraction performance due to speed control of the extraction fans
  • Electricity savings of up to 50
  • Installation of the compact dust extractors in the working area
  • 100 % air recirculation
  • Several disposal variants
  • Compact dust extractor combinable with briquetting press
